Shockingly, more than 2,000 people each year undergo a wrong site surgery in America, a scary figure for patients who are dependent upon the expertise of medical professionals. If you’re the victim of a medical mistake, filing a negligence lawsuit with a Georgia medical malpractice attorney could enable you to collect compensation for your pain and suffering, injuries, and medical bills.

The Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare (JCC), an organization geared toward improving the safety and quality of the nation’s healthcare, initiated a wrong site surgery project in 2009 to help prevent surgeries involving the:
  • wrong patient;
  • wrong procedure;
  • wrong site; and
  • wrong side of the body.
In addition to using unique problem-solving methodologies to pinpoint causes and solutions for wrong site surgeries as part of the wrong site surgery project, the JCC has released an informative video presentation on the subject.

The short video features a panel of experts in the health care field and explains the need for improved surgical care, as well as a greater emphasis on the patient’s needs.

In the video, Richard J. Webster, R.N. and Vice President for Perioperative Services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, succinctly states the bottom line: “It’s our job as health care providers to be advocates for these patients and to just ensure that they receive the most appropriate care. It’s the right thing to do.”

If doctors have failed to live up their duty of care for you, you’ll want to talk to a Georgia medical malpractice firm about filing a wrong site injury negligence lawsuit to hold the liable parties responsible for their painful mistakes.

Fantastic article! And thank you for the link to the video. I thought Joint Commission had one but could never fine it. Wrong site surgery is such a serious issue, and I was surprised how often a "never event" like this actually happens. Thank you for writing this article to call attention to it!
