May 9, 2012 – Cobb County, Ga. – A Smyrna police officer was injured in a hit and run accident on Tuesday, May 8.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the accident happened at about 3 p.m. at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Ridge Road. Officials said that a 1997 Nissan Maxima attempted to make a left turn at the intersection and crashed into Cpl. Gene Crawford, 53, who was travelling northbound on his motorcycle.

Crawford was injured in the accident and had to be taken to a local hospital immediately following the crash. He suffered 2 broken ankles, a broken leg and a fractured hip.

The driver of the Nissan, Jennifer Karen Cook, 21, didn’t stop after hitting the officer. Police caught up with her a short time after the crash and she’s now facing charges of hit and run, serious injury by vehicle, and a failure to yield while making a left turn.

Cook was transported to Smyrna City Jail, where she was held Tuesday night on a $25,000 bond. She’ll soon be transferred to Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
