June 28, 2011 - Atlanta, Ga. - A man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle while fleeing from police in Cobb County. According to a report at My Fox Atlanta, the high-speed motorcycle accident took place around 1 a.m. on Monday.

Representatives from the Georgia State Patrol say a trooper was pursuing the motorcycle but gave up the pursuit shortly after losing sight of the man on Kennesaw Road; however, after successfully evading the trooper, the man lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. The details of the accident are still preliminary, and troopers have not said how the accident occurred or if any other vehicles were involved.

The accident was discovered by Georgia State Patrol troopers shortly after the chase ended. The victim was transported by ambulance to Kennestone Hospital in Cobb County, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Troopers did not say if he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. His identity has not yet been released. The Georgia State Patrol has also not disclosed what prompted the police chase in the first place.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
