January 5, 2012 – Decatur, Ga. – A family is mourning the loss of a 7-year-old boy after he was struck and killed by a car on Sunday, January 1.

MyFox5 Atlanta
reports that Zederick Carr, 7, was with his father, DeMarcus Carr, and his 2 sibilings as they attempted to cross Flat Shoals Parkway. The family was in the middle of the 5-lane highway when a vehicle approached, causing DeMarcus to pull his children out of the way.

According to DeMarcus, he may have pulled the children back too hard and Zederick’s hand slipped from his brother’s grip, causing him to fall into the path of another vehicle. Emergency response took the child to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries the next morning.

Family members attending a vigil held on the day of Zederick’s death are hoping that this tragedy will be a call to action for a crosswalk to be established in the area; meanwhile DeKalb County police are still investigating. No charges have been filed against the drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
