Fox 5 News indicates that the incident occurred at around 12:15 p.m. on Winder Highway. A car and a tanker truck hauling 8,500 gallons gasoline collided on the roadway. The tanker truck was knocked onto its side, causing it to spill 5,000 gallons of gasoline on the road.
The accident report states that 2 people received non-life threatening injuries in the incident. Both people had to be transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for medical assistance.
The names of those involved in the accident have not yet been revealed.
Hazmat crews were on the scene to clean up the gasoline. Officials with the Environmental Protection Agency were also on the scene to monitor the air quality in the area. Georgia Department of Transportation officials returned to the scene the following day to repair parts of the highway that had been damaged in the accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
