June 22, 2011 - Gwinnett County, Ga. - According to a report at My Fox Atlanta, a Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) worker suffered serious personal injuries, Tuesday afternoon, when he was hit by a truck while responding to a previous car accident.
HERO workers are employed by the Georgia Department of Transportation to respond to serious car accidents on Georgia's major highways. Their job is to assist police officers and emergency response personnel in clearing accidents quickly to minimize their impact on traffic.
Police say one of the HERO workers was helping clean up the scene of a prior accident when he was hit by a truck on south Interstate 85, near the exit for Old Peachtree Road.
The victim suffered serious personal injuries to his arms and legs, although authorities believe he'll survive the accident. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where his condition is currently unknown.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
