April 17, 2012 – Atlanta, Ga. – A man was fatally wounded in a motorcycle accident that occurred in Atlanta’s south side on Sunday, April 15.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
reports that the accident happened shortly before 1:45 a.m. on Interstate 85, near Cleveland Avenue. Police said it appears that the driver of a 2006 Suzuki GSXR1000 motorcycle lost control of his bike and crashed into a guardrail.

The motorcyclist, 50-year-old Gregory Phillips, was killed in the crash. He was dead when officials arrived at the scene.

Police do not believe that any other vehicles were involved in the accident. There were no indications of skid marks or other signs of a collision at the accident site.

Speed may have been a contributing factor in the incident. The cause of the accident remains to be determined. Atlanta police are handling the stages of investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
