June 23, 2011 - Gwinnett County, Ga. - Authorities have released more information about the pedestrian accident on Tuesday that seriously injured a Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) on Interstate 85. According to a report at the Gwinnett Daily Post, the victim has been identified as Troy Moore of Conyers.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has also released additional information about how this accident occurred. A spokesman tells reporters that the victim parked his truck in a traffic lane in front of a couple pickup trucks that had been set up to divert oncoming traffic. That's when a semi-truck came through the area at high speed, crashed through the pickup trucks, and hit the victim, as he stood outside his vehicle.
The victim suffered broken bones and is expected to make a full recovery. Police say the driver of the semi-truck probably won't be charged in connection with this accident. The driver told police that his brakes failed, although accident investigators haven't confirmed his account. The truck driver hasn't been identified, but police say he also suffered minor injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
