October 28, 2011 - Morrow, Ga. - Joseph "J.B." Burke, a mayoral candidate for Morrow, was seriously injured in a hit and run accident on Sunday, October 23.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
reports that the accident happened Sunday evening at the intersection of Morrow Road and Clearbrook Drive. Burke was driving his Toyota eastbound along Morrow Road when a northbound Cadillac Escalade went through a stop sign and hit Burke's vehicle.

Burke was seriously injured in the accident and had to be transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is said to have suffered a concussion, broken ribs, and wounds on his hand. As of Tuesday, Burke was still in the hospital but his family members said that he is "making progress" in his recovery.

The driver of the Escalade fled the scene of the accident on foot. The Escalade had recently been stolen from Fulton County. Police were still in search for the missing driver.

The accident remains under investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
