October 26, 2011 - DeKalb County, Ga. - A pedestrian was fatally injured as she was walking across a DeKalb County street on Sunday night, October 23.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
reports that the accident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Moreland Avenue near Constitution Road. DeKalb Police said that Michelle Turner, 40, of Clarkston, was attempting to walk across the street when she was struck by a Jeep Cherokee.

Turner suffered fatal wounds in the accident and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Cherokee remained on the scene after hitting Turner. The identity of the driver has not yet been released to the public.

Officials said that the area of the accident was dark and that Turner was not walking in a designated crosswalk.

Reports indicate that the driver of the Cherokee will not be charged in connection with this accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
