September 8, 2011 - Atlanta, Ga. - A pedestrian was fatally injured after being hit by a car on Wednesday, September 7.

Fox 5 News
reports that the accident happened at about 5 a.m. on Interstate 285 just south of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The pedestrian was walking on the shoulder of the interstate when they were struck by a car. Further details as to how the accident occurred aren't yet available.

The pedestrian was killed in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. His or her identity hasn't yet been released.

The identity of the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian is also currently unknown. The driver wasn't reported injured in the accident.

There has been no word as to whether or not the driver will be charged in connection with this accident. Police haven't been able to determine why the person was walking along the interstate. The accident continues to be investigated.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
