November 22, 2011 - Atlanta, Ga. - An Atlanta police officer was sent to the hospital on Friday, November 18, when he crashed his car after swerving to avoid hitting a puppy in the road.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
reports that the accident occurred early Friday morning on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard in northeast Atlanta. The police officer was driving along the roadway when a pit pull puppy appeared in his path. The officer swerved to avoid the puppy and ended up going off of the roadway and crashing into a utility pole.

Reports indicate that the officer had sustained injuries in the accident and had to be taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. He was listed in stable condition as of Friday evening.

The identity of the officer has not yet been released to the public.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
