April 29, 2012 – Gwinnett County, Ga. – A teenage boy had to be put into a medically-induced coma on Friday, April 27, in order to treat injuries he had sustained in a single-vehicle car crash a couple days earlier.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the accident occurred early Wednesday morning in a Norcross neighborhood off of Beaver Ruin Road. It happened shortly after Alex Mora, 16, and 7 friends decided to ditch class to go car surfing. The teens were riding in an SUV and going at a high rate of speed.

Reports indicate that 3 or more of the teens, including Mora, were “surfing” on the outside of the SUV, holding onto the side of the vehicle. The SUVs driver then went speeding around a turn, causing the vehicle to overturn.

Mora was crushed underneath the vehicle and had to be rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center immediately following the crash. He’s said to have suffered a broken pelvis bone and leg.

Mora remained in the hospital as of Friday, when doctors had to put him into a medically-induced coma. They expect Mora to remain in the coma for at least a week, but the teen is stable and “the worst” is said to be over.

The driver of the SUV, Alejandro Rodriguez, 18, has been charged with hit and run, reckless driving and driving without a license.
