November 10, 2011 - Gwinnett County, Ga. - A truck driver was seriously injured when a tractor trailer crashed into a support pole for an overhead highway sign on Wednesday, November 9.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at the spot where Ga. 316 splits off of I-85. Officials said that a problem with the tractor trailer's left front tire caused the truck to go out of its lane. The truck then crashed into the steel support pole for the steel beams that hold up an overhead highway sign.
The impact caused the sign to fall to the ground. The truck dumped 50 to 70 gallons of diesel fuel out onto the highway.
The truck's driver was injured in the accident and had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. Officials described the driver's injuries as severe. His or her identity hasn't been released.
The tractor trailer was the only vehicle involved in the accident. No further injuries have been reported.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
