January 20, 2012 – Sandy Springs, Ga. – A pedestrian died in the hospital after being hit by a car Wednesday, January 18.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the pedestrian accident happened at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Hammond Drive and Barfield Road. Julie Marcella Hernandez, a 39-year-old transgender man, was walking near her home when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Further details of how the accident occurred are not yet available.

Hernandez was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital immediately following the pedestrian accident and later succumbed to head injuries sustained in the accident. The victim was pronounced dead in the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Hernandez was not injured in the accident. The driver, whose identity has not been released, remained on the scene.

No charges will be filed in connection with this accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
