June 24, 2011 - Atlanta, Ga. - Severe weather is being blamed for at least 3 car accidents in the Atlanta area. According to a report from My Fox Atlanta, a strong thunderstorm moved through the area overnight on Wednesday and into Thursday morning, bringing with it strong rain and heavy winds.

The first accident occurred outside Marietta, when a driver lost control of his vehicle near the intersection of Polk Street and Burnt Hickory Road. Police say the car crashed into a row of trees, shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Pictures from the scene show a silver SUV that sustained significant damage to the driver's side door. Police say the victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another weather-related crash occurred in Gwinnett County when a 29-year-old man lost control of his car while entering the freeway from Buford Drive when he also veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Although poor weather is being blamed for this accident, investigators believe alcohol played a role too.

A third fatal car accident, during the severe storms, happened on Georgia 400 although the cause is still unknown.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
