June 21, 2011 - Marietta, Ga. - A driver was killed on Saturday when a heavy storm moved through the Atlanta area, leaving destruction in its wake. According to a report at CBS Atlanta, the victim died shortly after 6 p.m.

Police say the victim, a 55-year-old woman from Marietta, was driving a Honda Accord on Powers Ferry Road when a large tree fell on her vehicle near the intersection with St. James Walk. The tree was blown over by a large storm that brought heavy rain and strong winds. Witnesses said the tree was very large and nearly demolished the victim's vehicle.

Pictures from the scene show a red Honda crushed underneath a large amount of debris while the back end of the car remains undamaged, the hood and front seats are completely crushed. Police say the victim was dead by the time first responders were able to extricate her from the wreckage.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
