The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the accident occurred at around 7:20 a.m. on Nathan Road, by Brownlee Place. It appears that the bus driver lost control, causing the bus to go off of the road and crash into a nearby tree. Further details of how the accident occurred are not yet available.
A total of 19 people, including the bus driver, had to be transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. MARTA spokesperson Cara Hodgson said that the medical conditions of the injured people are unknown at this time.
The identity of the bus driver has not been released. No charges have been filed in connection with this accident.
The cause of the accident remains to be determined. Heavy rains that morning may have been a factor.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
