September 16, 2011 - Covington, Ga. - The Rockdale Citizen reports that 2 people died on Sunday, September 11, in a crash between a motorcycle and a car, at about 10:20 a.m.

The accident happened at the intersection of Ga. Highway 138 and Gum Creek Road. Officials with the Georgia Highway Patrol said that an Oldsmobile Alero ran a stop sign at the intersection, crossing into the path of a motorcycle on Ga. 138. The motorcycle then crashed into the driver's side of the Alero.

The motorcyclist, Richard Lynn McKee, 24, of Loganville, was killed in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Alero, Deane Stapp Smith, 67, of Covington, was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta immediately following the accident. Smith was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

The Alero and the motorcycle were the only vehicles involved and no further injuries or fatalities have been reported.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
