July 29, 2011 - Atlanta, Ga. - According to a report at WSBTV Atlanta, an apartment building in southeast Atlanta suffered a partial collapse on Monday, after it was hit by a drunk driver.

Police say a man was driving a pickup truck, under the influence of alcohol, on Jonesboro Road when he lost control of the truck and crashed into a nearby apartment building. The truck slammed through the building, causing a portion of the upper floors to collapse. The driver then attempted to flee the scene on foot, but he was stopped by witnesses.

An investigation determined that the driver lost control of the truck because he was arguing with his passenger, a woman who was trying to convince him that he shouldn't be driving drunk. She suffered serious head injuries and was transported by ambulance to Grady Hospital. Her condition hasn't been released.

The driver of the pickup truck has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. The apartment building was occupied at the time of the crash, but police say no one inside the building was injured.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
