May 24, 2012 – Sandy Springs, Ga. – A man had to be flown to the hospital after he took a wrong turn and ended up colliding head-on with a street sweeper on Wednesday, May 23.

Fox 5 News indicates that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Ga. 400 near the Northridge Road exit. Officials said that a white Dodge Intrepid turned onto the exit ramp to Northridge Road and then its driver turned the wrong way, causing the vehicle to end up going southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway. The Intrepid then collided head-on with a street sweeper.

The Intepid’s driver was critically injured in the accident and had to be flown to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The occupants of the street sweeper were not hurt in the collision.

The names of those involved in the crash have not yet been revealed.

The northbound lanes of the highway were blocked to traffic for several hours following the crash while crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2010 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,244 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
