December 2, 2011 – Cherokee County, Ga. – A man was fatally injured in a single-vehicle car accident on Thursday, December 1.

According to a report from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
the incident happened at around 4 a.m. on Reinhardt College Parkway, close to the Bartow County line. Officials said that 67-year-old Ron Shelinburger, a resident of Canton, was driving along the road when he apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the road. His vehicle then collided with a rock cliff.

Shelinburger was rushed to Northside Cherokee Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by Cherokee County Coroner Earl Darby.

Lt. Howard J. Barker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department said that speed seems to have been a primary factor for the cause of the accident.

The crash is under ongoing investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
