October 7, 2011 - Atlanta, Ga. - A person was hospitalized following a hit and run accident on Thursday, October 6.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
reports that the accident happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Metropolitan Parkway, near Dill Avenue. A person was driving a motorized scooter on the roadway when the scooter was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

The rider was knocked from the scooter on impact. According to witnesses on the scene, the scooter was caught and dragged under the car. It burst into flames as it was dragged. The driver of the car stopped, reversed to dislodge the scooter, and then drove away from the scene.

The scooter rider was injured in the accident and had to be transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. The rider is said to be in stable condition.

Police say the car that hit the scooter was a Pontiac Trans Am or a similar type of car.

The accident remains under investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
