September 7, 2011 - Clayton County, Ga. - A single-vehicle accident sent a woman to the hospital in critical condition Friday, September 2.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the accident happened at about 10:30 a.m. on Jonesboro Road at Southlake Parkway. The woman was driving southbound on the roadway when, for reasons unknown, she veered off and crashed through a restricted area blocking a construction zone.
The woman's vehicle went through the barrels and signs and ran 920 feet down the blocked off dirt road. The vehicle reached an embankment and plunged 35 feet, landing on its top.
The woman was critically injured and had to be transported to Grady Memorial Hospital immediately following the crash. She is said to have suffered severe facial trauma.
The woman's identity hasn't yet been released. Police said that she's in her early 20s.
Morrow Detective Sgt. Larry Oglesby said that police have yet to determine what caused the woman to drive through the barriers and crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics, there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
