Two recent studies, one by the Silent Spring Institute and another by Consumer Reports, tested hair extension products and synthetic braiding hair brands found at beauty supply stores and online. Forty-one out of 43 products tested by Silent Spring contained carcinogens and other harmful substances; Consumer Reports tested 10 brands. Carcinogens were found in all 10; nine tested positive for lead.
The harmful chemicals in question have been linked to breast cancer, hormone disruption, neurological impairments, respiratory problems, hypertension, and kidney damage, among other conditions. High lead levels increase the risk of cognitive and reproductive impairment, as well as developmental delays in children.
Toxic substances can be absorbed through the scalp (the skin in general) or ingested through hand-to-mouth contact. Toxic substances can also be inhaled, particularly via the heating process during styling. When heat is applied, harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air.
While some people experience almost immediate itching, burning, or redness from using these products, many people repeatedly exposed to the toxic chemicals, such as consumers and hairstylists, may not be aware of it. Harmful substances accumulate and can eventually — possibly years later — result in a chronic condition. The long-term impact of using hair extension products is subject to ongoing research.
Synthetic hair braids and other extensions are frequently worn for weeks, so exposure to harmful chemicals is greatly elevated. Another problem is that hair extension manufacturers rarely disclose chemical ingredients on their packaging.
